Its the hardest thing, being there to the end. But we wouldn't have done it any other way. We loved Inka with every piece of our hearts. She was with us a scant 9 weeks. But in that time she filled the whole in my heart. But alas her time was to be short with us. She was diagnosed with a rapid invasive cancer only 5 weeks after being with us.
She had been to be spayed (as Marco is intact). She recovered from this fairly well until just over a week and a half later on a Thursday night she had convulsions through the night, thought at the time to be temperature caused. On the Friday morning we went first thing and then they asked us to go back in the afternoon for a follow up. The vets gut instinct was telling him to open her up again. This time they thought her body might be fighting the extra material from her spaying, or as she ate dirt a lot she may have a stone in her intestines.
Leaving her there was really hard.
I sobbed badly.
The vet had to leave the room with her as i couldn't walk away from her. The wait was interminable. Marco knew something was wrong, and stayed by my side. The time came to pick her up. I was excited until he said the words a small lump. The size of his little finger nail, they thought it might be an enlarged lymph node. A week later we had our answers.
We entered the consultation room not expected what we did. The vet bless him was as heartbroken as us. Surgery was not an option. We were told a month to two month maximum. We left hugging her close, telling her how much we loved her. We decided not to mourn but instead to celebrate her life. We took her on new walks gave her lots of new treats. By now she was on steroids to help with her appetite.
I had read a list of things to do with your dying dog. It said take lots of pictures .. so we did.
Her cancer spread very fast with lumps coming up all over her, however they did not dampen her spirit one bit.
She played with Marco and the tennis ball right up until the night she said goodbye.
She had a grand mal seizure. Which effected her movements in her front and back left legs. When it became apparent that she wasn't going to recover, we made the hard decision to call the vets. Marco spent some time with her before we took her down to the vets. He slept with her and just gave her comfort.
Marco must have known she would soon leave. He was like her shadow, making sure her ears where clean. Even a few hours before her seizure he kept sniffing her all over.
In the end she went quickly and painlessly cuddled up to her ted x
Our vets were superb through the whole process and cared for her just as we did.
Goodnight inkie pinkie. We love you so much x x
